Success at Glasgow Lands and Ithaca Scottish Games

Feadán Ór had another first place and all around success at the Glasgow Lands Scottish Games! We enjoyed a first placing at the Ithaca games as well. We will compete in Syracuse August 9th and hope our winning streak carries us through. A good score sheet from Alasdair Gilles, this last weekend, should keep us motivated!!
Many individuals did an outstanding job too. Matt Weasner scored an "above grade level" in grade 3 Glasgow Lands!! Charlie Zettek also took home a first place ribbon at the Ithaca games as well as third place at Glasgow Lands. Mary Taylor (grade 3), took a second and third prize at the Western Massachusetts games and a third at the Ithaca games. Great job everyone!

Excitement is mounting as we start our competition season starting with the Ithaca Scottish Games, held at the Pine Creek Campground, July 12. We will be competing with bands from New York as well as Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Good luck with the competition season, Feadán Ór!

Congratulations are in order for pipers Mary Taylor and Deb Baldwin. Both have been upgraded to Grade 3 by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association for the 2008 season. Solo piping results found Mary and Deb consistently in the prizes this past year which has led to their move to Grade 3. An outstanding accomplishment. Good luck to you both this season.

Resplendent in their new Red Leslie kilts and solid gold ties, the Grade 4 ensemble finished 2nd overall at the Northeastern Pipe Band Championship, splitting the piping honors with Catamount Pipe Band from Vermont. The Grade 5 ensemble also took the field in their first performance in complete uniform and new bass drum - they have been a proverbial “rainbow band” in various tartan kilts all season. Led by Mike Ives, the Grade 5 ensemble finished 4th overall in a field of thirteen and sported a second place in drumming.
Join Feadán Ór at the New Hampshire Scottish Games on Saturday, 24 September where they will cap their competitive season.

Starting the competition season with a bang, both of Feadán Ór’s competing ensembles won their respective contests at the High Banks Celtic Gathering. The Grade 5 ensemble made their debut wearing a veritable rainbow of tartan kilts (see photo) and took first place in piping, ensemble and drumming. The group was led on the field by Pipe Major Mike Ives and Lead Drummer Ben Ford after piper Dave Linder was escorted to his position on the field. Dave is recuperating from a foot injury and was not able to march in with the band.
The Grade 4 also had a stellar day taking firsts in piping, drumming and ensemble. Congratulations to both ensembles!

Prizes at the Canadian Pipe Band Championship

Still wearing the yellow streaked Old MacMillan tartan kilts, Feadán Ór’s Grade 4 ensemble took the 4th Place prize at the Canadian Pipe Band Championship in Hamilton, Ontario. Despite temperatures in the 90s and extremely high humidity the band finished second in ensemble and fourth in piping. The drum section also received excellent comments with special kudos going to the tenors. The band’s next competition (grades 4 and 5) is at the High Banks Celtic Gathering & Scottish Games at Letchworth State Park on Saturday, July 9th. Come cheer us on!

We’re changing our look ...

This summer we plan to unveil our new uniform. Although we have enjoyed a “uniqueness” with the Old MacMillan tartan we have worn since our inception ten years ago, we thought it was time for an update. Our new partners from Northampton Highland Guard originally choose a sharp, classic uniform to wear. We are taking elements and combining with some Feadán Ór tradition to create our new look. It is centered around the Red Leslie (also known as the Leslie or Duncan clan tartan). It still carries a yellow stripe (much more subdued) in keeping with our link to the gold of the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup golf matches is where Feadán Ór debuted.
We will miss the bumblebee jokes!

Pipe Bands Merge in Rochester!

The Feadán Ór Pipe Band and the Northampton Highland Guard are combining forces and will merge to create one larger pipe band under the Feadán Ór name giving all members greater opportunities to learn, perform and compete with a prize-winning pipe band. With the growth, Feadán Ór will field a new Grade 5 competitive unit for the 2005 season, maintain their already successful Grade 4 competitive unit, and introduce a Grade 3 competitive unit in 2006.
The leaders of both pipe bands recognize that this is a truly exciting and unique opportunity for piping and drumming in the Greater Rochester, Genesee Valley, Finger Lakes and Western New York regions providing an exhilarating and rewarding experience for all area pipers and drummers who are looking to focus on education, competition, diverse music and performance.
For additional information regarding these opportunities, please contact us. We look forward to an exciting season!

Congratulations to Jacob Kwiatkowski on being upgraded to Grade 3 Piper for the 2004 season. Jacob was successful in 2003 placing in every piping contest he entered. Jacob is now working on his new competitive repertoire (including his favorite, piobaireachd) and he is looking forward to competing in 2004. Way to go Jake!

The Feadán Ór Pipeband came in first place for the grade 4 competition at the Highbanks Celtic Gathering, despite uncooperative weather on Saturday. “Practicing in the rain the last two weeks must have been for a reason!” says Pipe Major Kevin Angus of the band’s success. The band placed 1st in piping and was also awarded for being the Best Grade 4 Drum Corps.
Other successes throughout the day included the “Piper of the Day” award, won by Jacob Kwiatkowski, and piping student Marjie Adams’ 1st place finish for the Grade 4 Sr. piping March contest.

*Feadán Ór is Scots gaelic for “Chanters of Gold,” and the term for starting up the bagpipes is known as “striking in.”

Piper Jacob Kwiatkowski wins Robert C. Gilchrist Memorial Trophy and Scholarship

The Feadán Ór Pipeband made its annual pilgrimage to the Colonial Highland Games in Fair Hill Maryland, where they greeted the competition season with typical Scottish weather. As usual, the weather was cold, breezy and damp, on the verge of raining, but this apparently didn’t hold back young piper Jacob Kwiatkowski.
Now at the age of 13 years old, Jake won the Robert C. Gilchrist Memorial Trophy and Scholarship by taking first in the Grade 4 Jr. March contest with “above grade level” comments on his score sheet. One of our youngest and oldest members, Jake started taking lessons from Pipe Major Kevin Angus when he was only 5 years old, and has played as an active member of the band since 1998.
The trophy and scholarship are awarded each year to the winner of the Amateur Grade 4 Junior piping competition in memory of Robert Gilchrist. The prize is to be used towards a piping school of the winner’s choice.
