Feadán Ór “Strikes Gold” at Highbanks Celtic Gathering

August 09, 2003 — The Feadán Ór Pipeband came in first place for the grade 4 competition at the Highbanks Celtic Gathering, despite uncooperative weather on Saturday. “Practicing in the rain the last two weeks must have been for a reason!” says Pipe Major Kevin Angus of the band’s success. The band placed 1st in piping and was also awarded for being the Best Grade 4 Drum Corps.

Other successes throughout the day included the “Piper of the Day” award, won by Jacob Kwiatkowski, and piping student Marjie Adams’ 1st place finish for the Grade 4 Sr. piping March contest.

*Feadán Ór is Scots gaelic for “Chanters of Gold,” and the term for starting up the bagpipes is known as “striking in.”

Piper Jacob Kwiatkowski wins Robert C. Gilchrist Memorial Trophy and Scholarship

May 17, 2003 — The Feadán Ór Pipeband made its annual pilgrimage to the Colonial Highland Games in Fair Hill Maryland, where they greeted the competition season with typical Scottish weather. As usual, the weather was cold, breezy and damp, on the verge of raining, but this apparently didn’t hold back young piper Jacob Kwiatkowski.

Now at the age of 13 years old, Jake won the Robert C. Gilchrist Memorial Trophy and Scholarship by taking first in the Grade 4 Jr. March contest with “above grade level” comments on his score sheet. One of our youngest and oldest members, Jake started taking lessons from Pipe Major Kevin Angus when he was only 5 years old, and has played as an active member of the band since 1998.

The trophy and scholarship are awarded each year to the winner of the Amateur Grade 4 Junior piping competition in memory of Robert Gilchrist. The prize is to be used towards a piping school of the winner’s choice.
